Profiled Professional Dressage Riders: Olivia Oakley

Facebooktwitterredditpinterestlinkedinmail

Olivia Oakley, is one of Horse Scouts’ profiled Professional Dressage Riders.

She is an International Dressage Rider and has been a British Equestrian Federation World Class Squad member since 2010. Olivia Oakley has represented Great Britain in 5 European Championships since 2010.

As a top ranked dressage rider and a UKCC accredited level 2 Instructor, she regularly holds clinics all over the UK and is available for weekly lessons from her base in Breadstone, Berkely. We have a link to her profile page below.

One of the most valuable things for  professional dressage riders, or any professional rider, is to secure sponsorship which helps increase their profile and that of the sponsor. Recently Olivia Oakley gained a valuable sponsorship from Caldene. Their Marketing Director, Rachel Bowles, was not short of the mark when she described this rising star (who is still under 25) as “a true British Talent” who “shows great strength of character, passion and a true dedication to the sport”.

Olivia is competing at this weeks Hartpury Festival of Dressage on her handsome DiMaggio gelding Donna Summer. Donna Summer, whose stable name is “Rio” was born in 2001 is out of the State Premium mare Belinda stands at 15.3hh. Owned by Kate and Olivia Oakley he does not let size make the slightest difference to his big presence in the arena.

You can see Olivi Oakley compete on Donna Summer in the Baileys Horse Feeds BD Intermediate II (Supported by Monarch Equestrian) at 13.57 on Sunday the 12th July 2015.

Horse Scout is pleased to sponsor the Horsescout.com FEI CDI Prix St George on Friday Morning at the Hartpury Festival of Dressage.

Olivia took on Donna Summer (Rio) as a very green 5 year old and has used this as a learning curve to produce this lovely horse as an established master of the ring in just a few short years.  They established their competitive relationship in 2007 in the affiliated arena with 140 odd outings since 2007. Olivia says he (Rio) is not past sulking if her attention is not focused on him. He has a big personality; something which makes him a crowd pleaser in the arena, with the judges and with “his Public”! And on occasion he is undoubtedly a bit of a clown!!! (have you ever seen the bloops from Carl Hester at Home!) If not…. Well you definitely should. Donna Summer looks every bit like he’s auditioning for River Dance…!!

Donna Summers’ Sire DiMaggio (by Weltmyer) is a hugely successful Hanoverian Sire his progeny are in the record books consistently across all years since his first crops with 45 qualifying progeny in the BEF rankings placing him 2nd in the All Time Sire Rankings with the British Breeding Federation (2007 – date) DiMaggios’ own averaged Score comes out at 9.36 from his top 5 scores.

Of Dimaggios’ progeny namesakes Dimaggio Chillis Dino has been campaigned by Lord Leo Cornford. Last year competing at Novice, now with 4 points, and only once out of the top 4.  Who, on his 4th  British Dressage  event has qualified for the Sheepgate Tack & Togs 2015 Championships! Dimaggio Delight competed by Rebecca Whitcombe taking 1st place at AM in the last five outings.

And Keystone Dimaggio a very successful eye catching black 7 year old stallion bought by Janet Gee, with Suzanne Lavendera, scored the highest marks of the Hickstead Dressage Masters Championships in West Sussex with 76.38% and 75.43%.

Dimaggios’ performance progeny carry his stamp and are well priced in the market for the potential they hold in their genetics.

Horse Scout has a Dimaggio Mare listed on its horses for sale pages.  She’s a nice looking animal with a good write up who would fit well with a rider aiming to compete.  Her profile can be found under Domonique Dancer

Olivias other top horse is of course Don Carrissimo on whom she has been hugely successful. Taking the ride in 2014,  Don Carrissimo is a 16.2 hh Don Crusdaor x World Cup III gelding owned by Anne & Steve Keen. With 15 wins in 23 starts its an impressive record and an indication of just how strong this partnership is.  Olivia Oakley has achieved her personal best score of 74.39% on Don Carrissimo in the FEI Inter 1Q in May this year. They have also qualified for the Premier British Dressage League National Championships in September following their win in the FEI Inter1Q at Wellington, and now have 3 Regional titles. With impressive results at in the Charles Owen AMO Winter Championship 4th (69.87%) on Don Carrissimo and 5th in the Superflex FEI Inter I Freestyle Winter Championship 5th with Donna Summer (72.29%) with a captivating performance which matched the score from Matt Frost with AMD Don Rosso II.

Her other three rides are Eclips, and two fairly new additions to the stable in Lordswood Gently 16.2hh 2010 Lord Leatherdale x Vaya Condios (Negro) owned by Mel Worgan & Lucy Fawcett and the newest addition, Lordswood Givenchy 16.1hh 2011 Chameur x Special D Alice Whitefield (Lordswood Dressage) and Heather Stack (Larkhill Stud) who came over from Holland in March this year will be aimed at Young Horse Classes.

Horse Scout wishes all the best to Olivia over the coming weekend and of course for the rest of the 2015 season with all her horses.

Stallions for Improving Performance Breeding: AJ’s Farbenfroh

Facebooktwitterredditpinterestlinkedinmail

Improving performance through breeding means considering the merits of your own mare and that of the stallion.

To breed a successful performance horse or to improve a breeding line then considering the genetics, conformation and performance record of both the stallion and mare are key and the horses in their pedigree will indicate the quality of the fola to be produced.

Key indicators for improving performance breeding with confidence

When a breeder is able to comment on the consistent quality of the progeny of their stallions then you can be sure that the stallion is influencing  the outcome through his own breeding performance genetics.

“Brilliant” replied Karen Raine “They all are, he (sic AJ’s Farbenfroh) throws such amazing stock” said Country Farm Studs owner in response to a post from D.S (Langho) after her 3 year old AJ Knockout was placed 2nd at the Northcote BS young horse Show in June this year.

AJ’s Farbenfrohs’ young stock (the oldest are now 4 years old) are certainly looking well-made and with results like this it indicates that he is passing on his Show Jumping Genetics to his progeny.

AJ’s Farbenfroh performance breeding genetics

Kurt Smiths’ lovely chestnut stallion is from a line of super star performance breeding His Sire Forrester, himself an international grand prix show jumper is by For Pleasure (Olympic team golds and a purse of over a million euro) son of the foundation stallion Furioso, who bred 250 state registered broodmares and 50 licensed stallions on his sire Forresters dam line we find  Grannus,  who died in 1993, bred seven Olympic horses and more than 60 approved stallions.

AJ’s Farbenfroh is the only licenced son of Forrester (a cross that his breeder used often) who at the moment has 15 international performance horses listed out of 29 progeny on Horse Telex.

AJ’s Farbenfroh has himself already done well on the BSJA circuit and has a good clean shoulder action with good humorous angle and length, which is a bonus when considering improving performance breeding..

AJ’s Farbenfroh influence on colour breeding

Interstingly AJ’s Knockout is a Chestnut Westphalian with a full sister born the following year (AJS* Farbenfroh) and two of AJ’s Farbenfrohs’ own filly foals AJS Knockout and AJ’s Tecquila Knockout both registered with the AES as roan two out of three registered AES filies.

Maybe AJ’s Farbenfroh breeder Hartwig Rellensmann based in Munster, the heart of the Westphlian breeders country in Northern Germany knew that he would have the capacity to throw foals with the is colourful coat colouring; or perhaps it was a reference to Farbenfrohs’ eye catching white stockings.

Most of his stock, though, do seem to be bay, brown or chestnut with 8 out of 12 being colts.

AJ’s Farbenfroh, owned by Kurt Smith stands at Country farm stud who have a range of lovely stallions listed on the Horse Scout website.

Catherston Springsteen

Breeding Performance Horses: Improver Stallion: Catherston Springsteen

Breeding for performance and temperament: Catherston Studs’ handsome and successful British Sports Horse Catherston Springsteen

For breeders looking for that “extra mile” they can’t go far wrong with the quality and performance of the handsome and very well made Catherston Springsteen who stands four square when Breeding Performance Horses. He is consistently producing quality performance stock which carry his temperament and presence into the competitive arena, which is why those in the know can say with absolute enthusiasm:

“What a star, mind you those Springsteen babies are worth going the extra mile for” said N.C.C. (27th May)

His first progeny, now rising six, are are proof of his ability to breed for performance. They are eventing successfully and competing in dressage, alongside others following on who are in the ribbons in Sports Horse and Young Event Horse classes at prestigious county level shows etc.  They are definitely proving themselves as class horses.

This international dressage stallion standing at the Catherston Stud is a champion British Sports Horse graded with the SHB-GB and the BWBS.

Catherston Springsteen; A Performance Stallion  for Breeding Performance Horses

This expressive and elegant British Sports Horse is eye catching and has the “look at me” so necessary in the show ring as well as in the dressage arena.  He is a stallion with an exceptional temperament which he passes on to his offspring, and breeders have been more than enthusiastic about this important character trait which Catherston Springsteen passes on.

His make is exemplary, and his conformation allows him to show his expressive, bold and elevated paces to their best with his lovely head complimented by his length of rein.

His own career has been well managed and he has been campaigned successfully not only by Jennie Loriston Clark but also  as part of the Junior Dressage squad with her granddaughter Charlotte Dicker. Long listed to be part of the squad last year, Charlotte is now part of the Junior Riders Prime Squad Team for GB with Catherston Springsteen and her beloved ride Sabatini.

Catherston Springsteens’ own performance breeding (Dutch Gold) his undoubtedly played a part (along with exceptional training) in his successful career on the dressage stage.

In 2003 he qualified for the finals of the Rhinegold Potential Dressage Horse at the European Championships at Hickstead and was also short listed for the World Breeding Championships for Young Horses.

By 2005 he had also qualified for the British Dressage National Championships at Advanced Medium and in the Prix St Georges.

At only 10 years old he won the Grand Prix to Music classes at the College Premier League and at the Wellington Premier League Shows, also taking 2nd in the Grand Prix Special at Wellington.

By 2007 he was proving his breeding performance with a series of important successes at Grand Prix competitions at National Level. After an injury, he took some time away from the competitive arena but stormed back in 2010 winning the Grand Prix Special at Swolle Stallion Show in Holland. Since this, he has qualified for the National Championships most years at Grand Prix taking respectable placing’s every time out, and now Charlotte Dicker is steering him to success for Great Britain.

Catherston Springsteen himself has a bold and careful jump, and his progeny show that he is passing this on with successful youngsters in the eventing field now competing at BE100 this season.

His older progeny Longstock Sinatra, bred by Jeanette Burtenshaw who has some 395 odd BD points (at the time of writing), has qualified for every year and progressed up the levels at the Regionals and last year qualified for the Winter Regionals at Advanced Medium level.

Catherston Springnut is catching up on the points, and is now consistently winning at Advanced Medium and has also qualified for Regionals as well as the Petplan Championships.

For breeders looking to identify a quality stallion and breed for performance next year, then Catherston Springsteen is definitely one to put on your list.

Amour G Tobiano Warmblood Stallion

Tobiano Warmblood Stallion: AMOUR G

Facebooktwitterredditpinterestlinkedinmail

Amour G: A key player at Team Torrent with Pippa Childerhouse in Norfolk, a Tobiano Warmblood Stallion; a star on the rise in the dressage arena.

Eye catching and successful in the competition arena, Amour G is a KWPN/Dutch Warmblood Tobiano Dressage Stallion standing 16.2hh.

There is no doubting his credentials to breed serious competition horses, but what went into breeding this Tobiano Warmblood Stallion?

Amour Gs’ Sire line Goshka Ringo, maternal grandson of Olympic Ferro and Purioso on the sire line, Purioso was the sire of Bonfire and Cocktail (sire of the 2006 KWPN Stallion of the year Jazz)

Purioso (son of Show jumping sire legend Furioso) produced three Olympic sons including Bonfire and Cocktail, who is the sire of Jazz, the 2006 KWPN stallion of the year.

His dams line is equally impressive with May Sherif sire of two progeny competing at the Soel Olympic Games in 1988.

Armour G is not just a pedigree. He has proved over and again that he has the presence and movement which is essential for a successful competitive career and also passes a strong stamp on his progeny. He also has a kind and gentle nature which makes him ideal for producing sensible riding horses for the amateur rider too. There is no denying that Armour G is so much more than a pretty face and a coloured coat!

As a Tobiano Warmblood competing as a Stallion in the dressage Arena, how does Amour G size up?

Amour G has both Olympic dressage and show jumping stars on both sides of his pedigree and these fantastic family members have influenced him and the way he is made. He has three loose, rhythmic elevated paces and a very good length of rein.

So maybe its no surprise that he was awarded Elite First Premiums for both Dressage AND show jumping. His lowest grading was 9 (out of 10).  His comments included very favourable remarks on his walk, his good hind leg, his scope and his switched on approach at his BEF grading.

He has been licensed with the AES, and graded with the SHB(GB) and WBS-UK in the Sports Horse Register (champion)

Amour G had a consistent dressage career to date and is now working well in  Advanced levels with impressive scores of up to 78.8%. He is aimed at PSG for this 2015 season with his new rider GB team member Nikki Crisp. Horse Scout wished them the very best in their new partnership and feels sure that the compliments from those judging him will continue along the same lines as previously. i.e. “a pleasure to judge!” “Impressive” and “A sure talent for the future”, and Horse Scout Blogger is sure the words of the Olympic Judge who described him as “world class” are not short of the mark, and Nikki Crisp certainly feels the same way about this lovely Tobiano Dressage Stallion.

Amour G has also competed under BSJA rules to Newcomers and also shows a bold but careful X-country flair. To cap it all he has also bee successful in the show ring where he has been lightly shown. With valuable accolades he was the winner of many sport horse classes and championships and won the coveted BSPA Superstar In Hand Championship twice.

Young Stock progress for this lovely Tobainao Dressage stallion, Amour G a KWPN/Dutch Warmblood.

His first progeny where born in 2010 and, with the older ones now under saddle, there is a definite trend towards success in them too. Armour Gs’ progeny are winning in the show ring at county level and there is an impressive count of BEF Higher First Futurity winners. His young stock having recently (June this year) been winning yearling Sporthorse classes and successes in Event Youngstock classes.

Youngstock from this gorgeous Tobiano Dressage Stallion may not always carry his colouring but they definitely are using his super genes to good effect in their competitive endeavours where class, integrity and superior quality as paramount.

TT Amika, (Amour G x Medoc x Louella Inschallah) BEF scores of 9 for her attitude and athleticism, and 9.25 for her trot which was elastic, uphill and rhythmic with particular compliments on her good movement behind scoring her the third highest mark of the day from 66 starters.

TT Amikas’ great score was topped, though, by her sibling in Achak Zan-Amour, who was graded 10 for atittude at the BEF Futurity.

First Kiss, a coloured filly by Amour G ex Dolphin Beech (TB) 1st in the  Sporthorse foal class, Suffolk County show.

2yr old gelding by Amour G placed 2nd on his first ever outing at the Royal Norfolk in the Sporthorse class.

First Kiss, 1st  2yr old Sporthorse class plus overall championship at Herts County.

Fleur de L’Amour Eventing foal section BEF Futurity Premium of 8.96

Kellythorpes Adonis G 2nd at Bucks County sporthorse class.

A Little Miracle 1st in Sporthorse foal class and foal championship at Oxford & Thame County show.

Horse Scout review of “improver” stallion with consistent High Premium ranked British Breeding Futurity progeny: Woodcroft Garuda K – Woodcroft Stud

Woodcroft Garuda K, a successful and elegant international grand prix dressage stallion, has a worthy reputation as an improver stallion. British Breeding Futurity results going back as far as 2009 show just how successful Woodcroft Garuda K has been and with no less than 6 elite stallions in his own pedigree, it is not hard to imagine that one of his 28 sons and daughters put forward for British Breeding Futuritys’ grading will be stepping up to the plate. Since 2009, with little variation in scores awarded, his progeny have consistently scored between 8.00 to 9.41 – averaged out this gives a consistent 8.52, placing the average offspring of Woodcroft Garuda K offspring in the higher premium rating for BBFA . With three of his young stock placed in the top 20 in the country, Woodcroft Gonales takes Elite and Reserve Champion within his section.

Champion British Breeding Futurity Progeny sired by Garuda K

Woodcroft Garuda K has also produced champion and supreme champion Trakhener foals in 2011 and 2012 with best British Bred & Reserve Supreme Champion Woodcroft Noah. Woodcroft are also producing Champion mares with 3 year old Woodcroft Natalia being awarded Premium Mare in 2013 Woodcroft Hertensong awarded Champion Performance Test Mare, Supreme Champion and also premium mare.

Woodcroft Garuda K is fully licenced as a graded Trakhener and Westfalian Verband stallion, and the with British Breeding Futurity rankings as a champion stallion on progeny results. Woodcroft Garuda is a Warmblood Breeders Society Reserve Champion & Group 1 Stallion. Whilst most of his British Breeding Futurity progeny are assessed for dressage, he has a fair few going forward for eventing too. With his 2009 assessed stock now 6, it will be interesting to watch their careers in the competitive arena.

British Breeding Futurity Higher Premium Awards in Eventing

It is interesting that of the nine 2014 Futurity Higher Premium awards in eventing, 3 offspring are directly sired by Trakhener stallions (One by Woodcroft Garuda K)

Top Ranked Show Jumping Stallion Progeny Review

Lucy Davis has had great success on Barron by For Pleasure and they are celebrating their recent 1.60 win in the Grand Prix at Rotterdam. After her win, Lucie talked about her top ranked show jumping stallion – “…but I think most importantly I have an incredible horse with a huge stride and (who is) also very careful”. Lucie rode Barron at the World 2014 games where the American team took Bronze. Lucie also acquired Barrons’ half brother V Pleasure (For Pleasure x Nabab de Reve) just over a year ago. Since February this year, Scott Brash has a new ride named Hello Forever, (For Pleasure x Nimmerdor) on whom he won the feature class of the day at Miami Beach, the historic American Invitational, where Hello Forever flew round the course and powering past the second placed competitor.

Select Stallion offer some of the top ranked show jumping stallions in the UK, and For Pleasure For Pleasure has a WBSFH ranking 5 (12th in 2013). Information on Top Show Jumping Stallion ‘For Pleasure’

For Pleasure retired from top level show jumping competition in 2006 (at the age of 20) but his career record shows that he is undoubtedly a stallion for breeders looking for a head start in the show jumping arena.

For Pleasure has certainly earned his stallion ranking through his progeny, but his own competition record proves his performance ranking with 3 gold medals on his result record. In 1999, the Germans took gold at the European Championships with another team gold in the 2000 Sydney Olympics. His third claimed in the 2003 European Championships and he also laid claim to the individual bronze with his rider Marcus Ehning.

For Pleasure won an incredible 10 international Grand Prix and 7 Nations Cups with Germany. For Pleasure won over 3 million euros during his career and was the top ranked sire for 2003.

He has classic Hanoverian good looks and conformation. For breeders looking for solid colour, his records show that he has produced an average 2/3 chestnut and 1/3 bay progeny.

His genetics are from the foundation line of top ranked show jumping super stars with Furusio ii, an Oldenburg foundation sire (250 state mares and 50 licensed stallions).

At 14.1hh, Woodlander Wales is small but perfectly formed. With the sweetest of temperaments given to him by his father Woolander Wavavoom, he also has that powerful frame and picture-perfect presence which has already bought him top rankings three years running at the Futurity Sports Pony Awards in 2011, 12 and 13 (at the WBS UK – a record score of 85%)

Woodlander Studs’ Woodlander Wales is graded WBS-UK, SPSS and Weser-Ems.

Woodlander Studs’ beautiful young stallion, wrapped up in a package of pure pony charm, is working well under saddle and looks set for certain success in the competition arena after his performance testing in Germany. He will be a dream ride for any top dressage rider who will have to embrace his forward thinking attitude. Woodlander Stud say “His temperament is absolutely charming, but he does like to go…and go…and go!”. Owner Lynne Crowden says “he will hopefully go to a talented young rider and become an FEI pony”

His dam, Helen, was bred by Mostyn Powell out of a very successful section C mare line and it is these Welsh lines that formed the basis of the best of German Pony breeding – so Lynne must be confident of his success in Germany.

Bred to a pony mare, he will be producing quality pony stock. This is a stallion for both FEI ambitions and for the national sports pony.

Vince is a modern dressage horse with an elegant self carriage, presence and grace. This gorgeous homozygous black warmblood stallion stands at 17hh.  He is an eye catching stallion who exudes presence in the competitive arena. His progeny carry forwards this elegance and, being homozygous black, he breeds bay/black progeny. From Country Farm Studs, Vince had many successes as a young horse including winning or being placed in all the BD Young Horse Series tests (Shearwater, Rhinegold & Nuumed) qualifying him for the National BD Young Horse Championships.

Vince’s warmblood sire Gribaldi KWPN Keur stallion was ridden by Edward Gal to countless victories in the international arena and was a leading dressage sire.  His sons include Panted Black, Anky Van Grunsvens ride, and another of Edward Gals rides Moorlands Totias (himself a world record holder). Gribladi had sired 10 licensed sons and became the #1 sire producing consistently high caliber offspring. Vince is an example of his Gribaldis’ quality stamp.

Vince also has numerous wins at novice & elementary level with scores over 75%, and he has regularly qualified for the regional dressage championships. He has all the ingredients required to produce consistent results at advanced dressage competitions.

Balou Star

Show Jumping Stallions Review: Balou Star

Facebooktwitterredditpinterestlinkedinmail

Looking for Show Jumping Stallions? Balou Star is your man. This Grade A Oldenburg is jumping 1.50 with Millie Allen (AASE3 Haddon Training at Hartbury) on the GB British Juniors Show Jumping Squad.

Millie Allen believes her winning performance may have been down to the bird poo which landed on her in the warm up! Well, I suppose it is a possibility but there is no doubt at all that it was down to skill of the rider and the fantastic performance of the Show Jumping Stallion Balou Star living up to his name.

This stallion is the sire of approved AES Stallion Balou Blue Diamond. In 2014, the top scoring foal at the BEF Futurity was Jorvik Star, out of a Cruyff mare. He was awarded an elite premium with an outstanding score of 9.20 which was the highest score awarded to any foal in the entire 2014 UK Futurity circuit. The Judges (Lucinda Sims, Jennie Loriston Clarke and Bridget Parker) said, “Jorvik Star has super proportions and an active walk as well as a balanced and powerful canter.” “We spent many hours searching for a stallion to complement C Vera Z and having always admired the Quick Star and Balou de Rouet bloodlines, we found the young, little known German-based stallion Balou Star” said Kate.

Balou Star himself scored a perfect 10 for his jumping at his own licencing grading in Alsfeld in 2008. On the Balou Star website, there is a quote from F. Solle, breeding manager of the Hessian Association, “we had a special highlight in the loose jumping. Caution, overview, skill, reflexes and technique. Balou Star demonstrates almost perfectly how we wish the sequence at the jump out of a fluent, handy gallop.”

In 2008 at the 4-year-old stallions performance test in Erbach, he was reserve champion of the riding ponies. Also, against a field of 42 international top horses, he was awarded the maximum possible score of 10 twice for jumping manner and ability at the 30-days-test in Schlieckau. “The little fighter has a big heart and an enormous canter with large ground cover. Because of this as well as his enormous transmission, Balou Star is suitable for the higher level of show jumping”

The first breeding years already resulted in some prize-winning premium foals. In November 2012, Balou Star’s first son Butterfly Flip was licensed in Pferdestammbuch Weser-Ems.

His first foals are showing good jumping technique and conformation. Like their sire Balou Star, they “search” for the fence

His genetic line is full of proven jumping stars. His two grandsires Baloubet du Rouet and Quick Star are the top ranked WBFSH sires also sharing a common sire Galoubet A, descended from The Sire of the Century, Alme Z.

This lovely 15.74 cm Grade A Oldenburg stallion has frozen semen available in the UK.
