Grafenstolz- A Master of all Trades

He’s dark, handsome, elegant and has talent in abundance. If you ever see him in the flesh or watch him in action, he would undoubtedly make an impression on you. The Trakehner stallion Grafenstolz, is certainly proving hot property in the breeding world right now and he is just one of the many, first class stallions we profile on Horse Scout.

Rarely do you find an stallion who both in his own performance and that of his off-spring has proven to be a Master of all Trades. In fact you would be hard pressed to find many stallions with better all-round credentials. Grafenstolz currently stands at Number One in the British Eventing stallion rankings and is in the top 10 of the World rankings for good reason but he is also siring a number of quality jumpers and dressage horses.

large_image4

The fact that World No 1 eventer Michael Jung chose to compete him as a young horse is testament to the stallion’s ability. The pair won the prestigious Bundeschampionnat 6 year old eventing championships (the German Young Horse Championships) and was also a finalist for the 6 year old Jumping and Dressage Championships. That same year, he won the World Eventing Championships in Lion d’Angers and then displayed his extraordinary scope and bravery when clearing 2 metres in an International Puissance competition.

His progeny are displaying the same talent, willingness and bravery together and seem to be inheriting his elegant movement. Some of his successful representatives include Grand Prix Iwet who finished 4th at Waregem in CSI3* level showjumping; Santana’s Gold who won the Junior European Championships; Gina K, Telstar de Bardenave, Saviola 3, Giaccomo YSS and Mr Schabel are all competing CCI3* eventing. Then in young horse classes he has dominated the Burghley Young Event Horse Finals as well as the French Young Horse Championships.

He is also the damsire of the reserve champion at the 2015 Trakehner approvals, Fellini who is now in training with leading Dressage rider Helen Langehanenberg.

Grafenstolz stands at 167cm and is approved by a number of the main studbooks: Trakehner, Selle Francais, AES, Anglo Arab, Hannovarian and is ranked number one of all the stallions in Baden-Wurttemberg.

His own breeding is exemplary. His sire Polarion qualified several times for the World Cup Finals in dressage and went to the European Championships with Laura Bechtolsheimer. His damline is equally impressive as his mother is the full sister of the approved stallion Gypsy King and the approved stallions Guy Laroche and Grimani are from this damline.

His stud fee remains at 900 euros plus VAT this season which includes a live foal guarantee.

Classical principals from across the pond – Some lucky Uk riders have benefitted from Dressage Clinics with  Dressage Producer Stephen Hayes this summer.

Now back in the USA Horse Scout offers congratulations to Stephen Hayes. Stephen Hayes, a Horse Scout Sponsored Rider, had a triple Grand Prix success, in New Jersey, on his ride Klouseau  owned by karen Blanks.

Already Employed by Karen Blanks (Herself a dressage producer) to ride another of her horses Stephen undertook the ride of Klouseau; and with only a few weeks lead time Stephen worked hard to create a good working relationship and was impressed with the horses down to earth temperament.

Uk Dressage Producers will be interested to see Kolouseaus’ breeding. His Dam Kastanie X11 bred eight times to Charlie Chaplin (Embryo Transfer) producing a mixture of State Elite mares, grand Prix and International dressage horses. Kastanie XII herself and State Elite Trakehner. Her sire Arogno was a successful State Elite Stallion who bred proven international performance horses in all three disciplines.

Popular on the continent, the USA and with UK  (woodcroft Stud) Producers, his sire is Charlie Chaplin (or E.H. Charly Chaplin) a well thought of Elite Approved Neumunster (1987) Trakehner Stallion with offspring in the USA and also closer to home. He was a prodigious Grand Prix horse winning over 46,000 Euro with his progeny (12012) netting over 100,000K between them.  An eye catcher in the arena with his large white blaze he carries the coloured gene.

Stephen Hayes is an international Dressage Producer and has a profile on Horse Scout.

Breeding for performance and temperament: Catherston Studs’ handsome and successful British Sports Horse Catherston Springsteen

For breeders looking for that “extra mile” they can’t go far wrong with the quality and performance of the handsome and very well made Catherston Springsteen who stands four square when Breeding Performance Horses. He is consistently producing quality performance stock which carry his temperament and presence into the competitive arena, which is why those in the know can say with absolute enthusiasm:

“What a star, mind you those Springsteen babies are worth going the extra mile for” said N.C.C. (27th May)

His first progeny, now rising six, are are proof of his ability to breed for performance. They are eventing successfully and competing in dressage, alongside others following on who are in the ribbons in Sports Horse and Young Event Horse classes at prestigious county level shows etc.  They are definitely proving themselves as class horses.

This international dressage stallion standing at the Catherston Stud is a champion British Sports Horse graded with the SHB-GB and the BWBS.

Catherston Springsteen; A Performance Stallion  for Breeding Performance Horses

This expressive and elegant British Sports Horse is eye catching and has the “look at me” so necessary in the show ring as well as in the dressage arena.  He is a stallion with an exceptional temperament which he passes on to his offspring, and breeders have been more than enthusiastic about this important character trait which Catherston Springsteen passes on.

His make is exemplary, and his conformation allows him to show his expressive, bold and elevated paces to their best with his lovely head complimented by his length of rein.

His own career has been well managed and he has been campaigned successfully not only by Jennie Loriston Clark but also  as part of the Junior Dressage squad with her granddaughter Charlotte Dicker. Long listed to be part of the squad last year, Charlotte is now part of the Junior Riders Prime Squad Team for GB with Catherston Springsteen and her beloved ride Sabatini.

Catherston Springsteens’ own performance breeding (Dutch Gold) his undoubtedly played a part (along with exceptional training) in his successful career on the dressage stage.

In 2003 he qualified for the finals of the Rhinegold Potential Dressage Horse at the European Championships at Hickstead and was also short listed for the World Breeding Championships for Young Horses.

By 2005 he had also qualified for the British Dressage National Championships at Advanced Medium and in the Prix St Georges.

At only 10 years old he won the Grand Prix to Music classes at the College Premier League and at the Wellington Premier League Shows, also taking 2nd in the Grand Prix Special at Wellington.

By 2007 he was proving his breeding performance with a series of important successes at Grand Prix competitions at National Level. After an injury, he took some time away from the competitive arena but stormed back in 2010 winning the Grand Prix Special at Swolle Stallion Show in Holland. Since this, he has qualified for the National Championships most years at Grand Prix taking respectable placing’s every time out, and now Charlotte Dicker is steering him to success for Great Britain.

Catherston Springsteen himself has a bold and careful jump, and his progeny show that he is passing this on with successful youngsters in the eventing field now competing at BE100 this season.

His older progeny Longstock Sinatra, bred by Jeanette Burtenshaw who has some 395 odd BD points (at the time of writing), has qualified for every year and progressed up the levels at the Regionals and last year qualified for the Winter Regionals at Advanced Medium level.

Catherston Springnut is catching up on the points, and is now consistently winning at Advanced Medium and has also qualified for Regionals as well as the Petplan Championships.

For breeders looking to identify a quality stallion and breed for performance next year, then Catherston Springsteen is definitely one to put on your list.

Horse Scout review of “improver” stallion with consistent High Premium ranked British Breeding Futurity progeny: Woodcroft Garuda K – Woodcroft Stud

Woodcroft Garuda K, a successful and elegant international grand prix dressage stallion, has a worthy reputation as an improver stallion. British Breeding Futurity results going back as far as 2009 show just how successful Woodcroft Garuda K has been and with no less than 6 elite stallions in his own pedigree, it is not hard to imagine that one of his 28 sons and daughters put forward for British Breeding Futuritys’ grading will be stepping up to the plate. Since 2009, with little variation in scores awarded, his progeny have consistently scored between 8.00 to 9.41 – averaged out this gives a consistent 8.52, placing the average offspring of Woodcroft Garuda K offspring in the higher premium rating for BBFA . With three of his young stock placed in the top 20 in the country, Woodcroft Gonales takes Elite and Reserve Champion within his section.

Woodcroft are also producing Champion mares with 3 year old Woodcroft Natalia being awarded Premium Mare in 2013 Woodcroft Hertensong awarded Champion Performance Test Mare, Supreme Champion and also premium mare.

Woodcroft Garuda K is fully licenced as a graded Trakhener and Westfalian Verband stallion, and the with British Breeding Futurity rankings as a champion stallion on progeny results. Woodcroft Garuda is a Warmblood Breeders Society Reserve Champion & Group 1 Stallion. Whilst most of his British Breeding Futurity progeny are assessed for dressage, he has a fair few going forward for eventing too. With his 2009 assessed stock now 6, it will be interesting to watch their careers in the competitive arena.

ASTRIX – This Serene Stallion holds the World Champion Young Dressage Horse Hat Trick – LG Stud

Astrix, a handsome Black KWPN/Dutch 16.3hh Warmblood dressage stallion is put forward for nominations by LG Sports Horses.

For the UK breeder, it is useful to note that Astrix has been admitted to the KWPN, Oldenburger Verband and the Hannoveraner Verband. This serene stallion showed off his obedience and alertness even under pressure of very inclement weather at his stallion grading. Astrix kept his performance steady and was rewarded with a well deserved 9.6 for his trot, one of the highest grades ever!

Emmelie Scholtens rode Astrix in the World Championship for Young Dressage Horses in Verden and took the title for them both when he was five and repeated this when Astrix turned six .

Astrix’s family tree on his Horse Scout stallion profile page is brief and belies the string of champions he follows. His pedigree is perfect for his dressage career.

Astrix’s successful Grand Prix Sire, Obelisk, has many progeny competing at national dressage level. Obelisks’ son Tango is currently ridden at Grand Prix level by Canadian Cheryl Meisner. From his mother’s line, the ‘keur’ stallion Olivi (Jaxx + Aktion), also competes at Grand Prix. Olivi is the father of stallion UB40, a KWPN admitted stallion (Michelangelo) and Universal (Zuidhorn). Olivi’s son Triviant (Saluut) is also Grand Prix.

Astrix’s dam bloodline can be traced through Lady Réveil from Wittenstein van E. van Binsbergen, Zuilen. Also descending from the dam is Grand Prix qualified Jasper (Ferro x Tesdoorn f. Luckboyxx). Astrix carries Jazz in third generation and is free of Flemmingh and Gribaldi blood.

With his first crop in 2012, Asterix’ succeeding foals have all got his elegant blood stamp.

Heaven is a stunning dark Bay Hannoverian 2012 Graded: WBS-UK stallion standing 16.1hh (165cm) listed with Horse Scout.

Lynne Crowden, owner of the Woodlander Stud, proudly says that from the very beginning, this young stallion has topped the lookability and the lovability polls. As the highest scoring Futurity dressage foal in 2012, he impressed with his type and his movement and this was despite being a very late foal.  Again  at the WBS_UK licencing in 2014 that he impressed with the way of going. This is a horse of “blood” (lighter weight build) but has unusually big movement for his type. Of course his dam line is impressive, St Pr Limoncello, was a Foal Champion, a Youngstock Champion and a Mare Champion and is already the dam of one other Hannoverian approved stallions, Clapton. She is also the dam of the top young dressage horse, Woodlander Betty Boo and her 2014 foal, by Zack achieved Futurity Elite and was also the Reserve Filly Champion for BHHS 2014, and Heaven is no exception in the good looks and eye catching stakes. Heavens sire Hotline was not only the top priced stallion at the auction in Verden but went on, via the Danish Young Horse Champion win, to achieve many successes up to and including Grand Prix. Heaven’s own sire, Hofrat also performed to a high level in the sport. Heaven also boasts the British Team horse Wie Weltmeyer ridden by Emma Hindle from his dams side.

How to compete using a “Class Ticket”. Tried and Tested, Job Done!

Facebooktwitterredditpinterestlinkedinmail

Yesterday Horse Scout Blogger spotted that you could get a free class ticket on the British Dressage facebook page but “What are class tickets?”

By buying a class ticket, you can enter one British Dressage class without being a member or having a registered horse. You can use class tickets to compete and will be eligible to win rosettes and prize money, but will not receive BD points or qualification, except for Area Festivals and Combined Training Championships. If a rider using a class ticket wins a qualifier other than those specified above, qualification will pass to the next eligible competitor. You can buy a class ticket from the British Dressage Web site. These are also available in the competition section of this website. You will need to pay the usual class entry fee and abide by British Dressage Rules rules.

British Dressage say: Much more than just a ticket to compete!

If you are already competing in unaffiliated dressage competitions and want to get more involved in this fantastic sport then British Dressage is the place for you! Much more than just a ticket to compete, BD, the National Governing body for the sport in the UK, is a nationwide club for all things dressage, offering training, competitions, information and social opportunities for all. Your horse can earn nationally recognised BD points and you can qualify to take part in prestigious Championships or Festivals.

Most of all affiliated dressage is accessible. Complete competition schedules and lists of training days arrive on your doormat every two months as part of BD magazine. The BD website also carries this vital information (and much more!), and staff at the BD office are on hand during office hours to answer any queries you have. From where to go and what to wear, to competing internationally and representing your country – British Dressage is working to help you get the most out of your sport.

Getting Started

All affiliated shows are open to the public and the major championships are excellent opportunities to see the best at all levels and particularly the nation’s dressage celebrities competing for prestigious national titles. You may also want to go along to your local affiliated venue to check out the facilities and the competition!

You can get a taste for affiliated competition without becoming a full BD member by using class tickets available through the BD shop or by entering Prelim classes.

Class tickets cost £8 each and each ticket allows you to enter one affiliated dressage class without being a member or having your horse registered. You can win rosettes and prize money but you will not receive BD points or any qualifications. You can also use Class Tickets to gain the score sheets needed to qualify to enter an Area Festival.
